Why circles ruffle, cup, or lie flat — the arithmetic behind every round
Most pattern faults are not matters of taste or tension. They are sums that do not close, and you can run those sums before you pick up a hook. This page is the arithmetic Crochive checks, written out so you can check it by hand too.
The flat budget: how much a circle may grow
A circle worked in rounds is a spiral of concentric rings. For the fabric to lie flat, each ring's circumference has to grow in step with its radius — and circumference grows linearly with radius. So a flat circle adds the same number of stitches every round, and that number is set by the height of the stitch you are using.

That is why the classic sc circle runs 6, 12, 18, 24 — each round adds six. Taller stitches make taller rings, so each ring's circumference jumps more, so the budget is bigger.
The budget is really your own first round. Start a sc circle with 8 in the ring and it grows by 8 per round, perfectly flat. The numbers in the table are what a magic-ring start usually holds; the law itself is "each round adds whatever round one held".
What arithmetic cannot settleYarn, hook, and hands vary. The budget says whether the written pattern can lie flat; whether your fabric does is settled by a swatch, and nothing else.
Why does my crochet circle ruffle?
Ruffling is edge length with nowhere to go. Grow a round past the flat budget and its circumference is longer than a flat ring at that radius can be — the extra length has to buckle up or down, and it waves. Three rounds of over-budget growth and you have a frill whether you wanted one or not.

Note what the check did not say: it did not say the round's count is wrong. 36 is exactly what the instruction makes. Ruffling is a shape fault, not a counting fault — the sums close and the fabric still cannot lie flat. That is why counting alone never catches it.
Why does my circle cup into a bowl?
Cupping is the same law run the other way. Grow by less than the budget and the outer edge is shorter than the fabric it has to contain, so the piece pulls inward into a dome. The ratio tells you exactly how much: growth divided by the flat budget is the sine of the cone's half-angle. Add 3 where the budget is 9 and you have built a cone of about 19° — a shallow bowl.
Whether that is a fault depends entirely on what the piece has already said. A hat crown, an amigurumi head, a basket — these grow partially from the start, and partial growth is simply what a dome is. But a piece that has been growing at the flat budget and then drops below it has changed its mind, and if it was meant to be a coaster, that round is where it stopped being one.

The anchor law: every stitch needs somewhere to go
Every round obeys two sums at once. It produces stitches — everything it makes — and it uses anchors: the stitches and chain-spaces of the round below that it works into. The produced count has to match the number the pattern declares in parentheses, and the used count can never exceed what the round below left behind. A round that breaks either sum cannot be worked as written, no matter how good the yarn is.
Worked example — a count that lies, and how the next round settles it

FAIL · R2 the stitches on this line make 12, but it declares 11.The count is the typo: round 3 declares 18, which it only reaches worked on 12 stitches — not on 11. The stitches written here are right; the number beside them is wrong.
This is why declared counts matter even though they feel like clutter: each one is a tripwire. With a count on every round, an error is caught on the round it happens. Without them, you discover it five rounds later as a piece that will not close — and by then, which round lied?
How to count any written round by hand
Repeat notation is the only hard part, and there are just three forms. Whichever a pattern uses, the method is the same: count one pass of the repeated section, multiply, add anything outside the repeat.
The three repeat forms
Stars:*sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; repeat from * 6 times — one pass makes 3 sts and uses 2 anchors; six passes make 18 on 12. Brackets:[sc, 2 sc in next st] x 6 — identical arithmetic in different clothes. "Around":(sc in next st, 2 sc in next st) around — no count given, so the round below supplies it: 12 anchors ÷ 2 per pass = 6 passes.
Two phrasings that trip people
2 sc in each of next 3 sts means three separate increases — 6 sts made on 3 anchors, not 2 on 1. And sc2tog runs the other direction: one stitch made on two anchors, which is how twelve becomes six in a single round of decreases.
Worked example — mixed phrasing

Amigurumi is where the flatness question disappears — you want curvature — and what remains is completely checkable. Read each round's growth against the budget and the shape names itself: full budget is a disc, zero growth is a tube, partial growth is a cone or dome, negative growth is a closing dome. A sphere is simply disc, then tube, then closing dome, in that order.
Closure has a floor of its own: stop decreasing when 5–8 stitches remain and gather them, rather than decreasing all the way down. Running the count to one or two bunches the tip; closing everything at a single point makes a corner where a curve should be.
Tube rounds are the reason "this piece isn't flat" is not automatically a fault — straight sides are legitimate shaping. The check only speaks when a piece that established a flat trajectory deviates from it.
